Font inspiration #1: Vintage book covers
One of my absolute favorite sources of font inspiration are book covers from my grandfather's collection.
Truth be told, I've been known to like anything old (one of my favorite activities is rummaging through bargain-boxes of what most people would consider garbage), but some vintage book covers have truly beautiful and unusual typography, along with lovely illustrations.
So, below, are three of my favorite examples of vintage book covers that are turning my font-making-mind's wheels, at the moment.
I particularly love that in all three books there is a monochrome feel to the cover and illustration, giving the type an extra bit of spotlight. (And don't the three colors look good together?!)
I love the Modernist feel of the letters in “Textos de Intervenção”, which hints at the contents inside, and goes perfectly with the illustration.
In “Werther”, the title is particularly eye-catching, for its size and unusualness. But I also have a soft spot for the type used in the edition and name of the publishing company: the A and Ç especially.
And finally, I will always fall for a Gothic calligraphy, such as the one featured in “Lucky Jim”, especially when it's paired with a simpler sans-serif. Mmmh!
